Heathers the Musical

Heathers the Musical has landed for a six week only run at Soho Place. Following a previous West End run at The Haymarket, two UK tours and a massive run at The Other Palace, the corn nuts are alas appeased with access to the candy store once more.

Jenna Innes leads the cast as Veronica Sawyer, Keelan McAuley as Jason ‘JD’ Dean, Esme Bowdler as Heather Chandler, Sedona Sky as Heather Duke, Daisy Twells as Heather McNamara, Lucy Sinclair as Ms. Fleming / Veronica’s Mom, Amy Mills as Martha Dunnstock, Ivan Fernandez Gonzalez as Kurt Kelly, Jason Battersby as Ram Sweeney, Conor McFarlane as Ram’s Dad / Big Bud Dean / Coach Ripper, Alexander Service as Kurt’s Dad / Veronica’s Dad / Principal Gowan / Ben Fenwick as Beleaguered Geek, Lewis Asquith as Hipster Dork / Officer / Swing, Bradly Doko as Preppy Stud / Officer / Swing, Jasmine Cole as Young Republicanette / Swing, Kelly Sweeney as Stoner Chick / Swing, Eliza Bowden as New Wave Party Girl / Swing, May Tether as Drama Club Drama Queen / Swing, Madeline Hargrave as Midwestern Surfer Punk / Swing.

It’s no secret if you follow my social media Heathers has been one of my long-time favourite shows. I have lost count of the number of different casts I have seen however this cast really is strong. Vocally I was mostly blown away by this cast. Given the number of casts I have seen this is quite the achievement.

It is clear from the well-timed cheers throughout the show that the Corn Nuts are still enamoured with Heathers and the cult following this show has isn’t going to dwindle any time soon. Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe’s well timed dark yet comedic writing still stand the test of time with music to match. Heathers really is a show that will have you laughing, crying and cheering throughout.

Veronica and JD are hard roles to play, with Veronica being on stage through most of the musical Jenna Innes gives a beautiful and vocally incredible version of Veronica. Keelan McAuley give the perfect JD going from seeming somewhat normal to completely deranged in the second act.

Soho House is a wonderful venue, previously having been a 360 view for other shows I was dubious how Heathers would be displayed in such a theatre however it appears the stage has been moved back and more seat added meaning the big reveals in Heathers are just as powerful as before if not more so with the final extension at The Other Palace feeling somewhat stale by the time it finished.

I look forward to seeing Heathers again shortly!
